Meet My Mum
The Meeting Date is Coming Closer!
15th June - 17th June | 2022
Today was only a short distance to ride so I had the settings again on "unpaved roads". I had some nice offroad tracks between some villages on the way over to Eger. Coming into this direction, you start to see the mountains over in Slovakia and the area around Eger is also hilly. How nice after the flat Puszta, a bit of change in the scenery.
Around late lunchtime, I arrived at Magyar Route 66 (www.magyarroute66.com) in Szilvasvárad. The dutch owners Leen and Stephanie (father and daughter) are also bikers and travellers, so you felt immediately welcomed and like at home. They have also some donkeys and a horse and it happened that the blacksmith was in, so I helped to catch the donkey, which was not very easy.
The rest of the afternoon and evening we talked about travelling, motorbikes, moto travelling, life, etc ...until it was time to sleep.
After breakfast, I took it easy and Stephanie gave me a tip of a nice twisty road to take towards Budapest. I really enjoyed it. Just about 30km before Budapest OsmAnd directed me offroad, which was really nice farm tracks, easy-going for a change until it took me down along a lake and the track started to get ruttier and less used. I stopped at some point, but there was no ground for my foot as there was a rut that I didn’t see as overgrown with high grass. Great! Here we go: taking all luggage off and pulling the bike into a position until I could eventually lift it up! Luggage back on the bike, carrying on as only 2.5 km to the next village. 100m driven and buff, another rut, this time the other side! Same story, all off and eventually bike up. That was really tiring in the heat. I carried on another 200m and then there was a sign that you are not allowed to pass! Nooooo! You must be kidding me! Now I had to turn around my bike on that rutty track and drive all back until the main road! Well, workout for the day done!
I hadn’t had any food since breakfast, so I bought myself some pizza bread and a poppy seed cookie in a bakery. At the next petrol station filling up Schimmelchen and getting me drinks for my "lunch" and later for tonight. From there it was only 25km to the Motocamp in Budapest (www.bikercamp.hu) where I will stay overnight; recommendation of Leen and Stephanie.
That was really nice as various travellers on two wheels stayed here, so you got talking to everybody around and sharing stories - how cool is that!
In the morning, it was packing up "con calma" as it is only a 30mins drive to HB Moto (www.hbmoto.hu) in Érd, on the other side of Budapest. After 14000km it was time for new tyres! As we knew since Albania, I also needed a new cush drive. As the oil exchange in Montenegro was not done as planned Schimmelchen got again new oil but this time the correct one with an oil filter. Hováth Béla checked also the bearings and brake pads, so I opted to change already the back ones, as I do not want to search soon again for a garage. When it came to payment it turned out that Hováth Béla doesn’t take card payments, so he let me off without payment ;-) Kidding - he sent me his bank details through later that night! How trustful - Köszönöm Hováth Béla!!
The hotel, where I will stay with my mum, is right in the centre of Budapest, right along the Danube river. How cool is that! And it is a really beautiful city hotel with a safe garage (I hope so!). After the check-in, I settled myself in the room whilst I was waiting for my mum to arrive.
After she has arrived and unpacked, we had a welcome drink at a bar close by, enjoying the view and then we went to a small bistro restaurant just down the road. As it was for us a long day, it didn’t take us long to collapse in bed that night.
If you are interested in what we have done in Budapest in the following days, please feel free to read soon the next blog!
